California Bans the Farming and Sale of Octopuses

oct

In September 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act (A.B. 3162) into law. Cosponsored by Animal Legal Defense Fund and APA Member Organization, Social Compassion in Legislation, this exciting victory made California the second state to ban the farming of octopuses.

Thanks to the contributions of APA Members in both California and Washington, there is now a growing movement to ban octopus farming across the nation, with other bills being introduced in multiple states.
