LANDMARK WIN FOR CALVES AND PIGS IN NEW JERESY

On July 16, 2023, after a 14-year coalition effort, a gestation and veal crate ban was signed into law in New Jersey, making it the 15th state to prohibit one or more of the main forms of extreme confinement. The Animal Protection League of New Jersey, an APA member, was part of the coalition fighting for this bill, and The Humane League (THL) provided action support for the campaign. This marked a significant win as the bill had once before made it all the way to the governor’s desk, with bipartisan support, only to be vetoed by then-Governor Chris Christie. The many coalition members celebrated the victory of this long and hard fought battle.
