VICTORY FOR RABBITS IN CONNECTICUT
In May 2023, APA member Connecticut Votes for Animals (CVA) successfully stopped a bill that would have permitted the slaughter of up to 1,000 rabbits per operation. The bill was heavily backed by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut House leadership.
APA supported the effort by providing data, drafting proposed amendments, strategizing tactics for defeating the bill, and crafting an op-ed and a letter to legislators. These materials argued that rabbit farming and the slaughter process are among the cruelest farming practices that exist. When additional pressure was needed, The Humane League's Communications team sent an action alert to supporters in the state. All of these efforts bolstered the excellent lobbying work led by CVA.
The bill was reintroduced in 2024, and APA staff continued to assist CVA in fighting it. This time, the bill died without a vote in the state Senate due in part to insufficient support and the opposition mounted against it.
